Grove Business Park Demonstrates the Potential of Solar Carports
A new commercial property development is demonstrating how solar carports can unlock additional renewable energy generation without using additional land. As organisations look to strengthen energy resilience, reduce electricity costs and prepare for greater electrification, projects like this highlight the growing role solar carports can play alongside rooftop solar PV systems and battery storage.
This summer, the latest phase of Grove Business Park at Oxfordshire Science Vale is preparing to welcome new science, technology and commercial businesses to one of the UK’s fastest-growing innovation hubs. Alongside the rooftop solar PV systems that have become an increasingly familiar feature of modern commercial developments, the project also incorporates two bespoke solar carports capable of generating an additional 88kWp of renewable electricity.
“This has maximised the clean energy-producing potential of these newest buildings, and future plans suggest more of the same as the business park develops,” says Brett Gardner from Axiom Building Services.
Gardner says almost every building they work on has solar PV installed but, while EV charging is now expected on most new commercial developments, solar carports are still an underused and under appreciated part of the story, even though they contribute to climate goals while improving energy security.
Designed and delivered by SolarSense in collaboration with Barnwood Limited, Axiom Building Services and SRA Architects, the bespoke solar carports were engineered to maximise onsite renewable energy generation while complementing the architectural vision for the development.
“The addition of the solar carport structures alongside the rooftop solar PV installations enhances the development’s sustainability credentials, supporting the targeted BREEAM Excellent rating and the vision for a sustainable campus,” adds Fiona Smith, Associate at SRA Architects.
“Designed in collaboration with SolarSense, the structures have been carefully tailored to the site, with colour-matched finishes that complement the existing architecture and minimise their perceived scale and massing, while responding sensitively to the site’s operational and spatial constraints.”
Why Solar Carports Are Gaining Momentum
Unlike ground-mounted solar PV arrays and large-scale solar farms, solar carports make use of existing parking areas, allowing organisations to generate renewable electricity without sacrificing valuable operational land. The electricity generated can be used to power adjacent buildings, support EV charging infrastructure or be integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS), helping organisations increase self-consumption and reduce reliance on expensive grid electricity.
Alongside reducing electricity costs and carbon emissions, solar carports deliver a range of practical benefits for organisations, employees and visitors. They provide sheltered parking that protects vehicles from rain, snow and excessive heat, improve safety through integrated lighting and CCTV infrastructure, and can support on-site EV charging powered by renewable electricity. By combining energy generation with enhanced parking facilities, solar carports transform underutilised space into a valuable operational asset.
“But carports still remain the exception rather than the rule,” says Russell Mees, managing director of SolarSense. “We’ve seen how they can come into their own as we’ve worked with organisations – from the RSPB to large corporates like Renishaw – who’ve added solar carports to their renewable energy production. Here in Oxfordshire, it was really exciting to work closely with Axiom and SRA and see solar carports form part of the design from the start – being integrated into the whole aesthetic of this growing business park.”
“The potential here is huge,” says Mees. “Think of the thousands of acres of asphalt car parks across the UK – outside hospitals and stations, retail parks and office developments. France has introduced legislation requiring car parks with more than 80 spaces to be covered by solar canopies. It is really exciting to see what difference that will make.”
Government Policy and the Future of Solar Carports
Last year the UK Government launched its own consultation to examine whether something similar should be applied here, effectively making solar carports part of the Net Zero action plan. There was disappointment when the response published recently confirmed they will not be taking this further at this time, although policies to simplify and install EV charging infrastructure are still being developed.
Whether the latest heatwaves will make the untapped potential of solar carports harder for companies to ignore remains to be seen. In recent weeks car parks across the country absorbed heat through the day before radiating it back into surrounding urban areas, making them feel hotter still. Meanwhile drivers are snaking around the asphalt each day looking for a parking place in the shade, or an EV station to charge their vehicles while all the energy that might have been generated if the same areas were shaded and covered in solar PV was simply lost.
“It’s not about bringing in complicated technology. It’s about thinking a little differently about the enormous potential of these huge spaces we use every day…” says Russell Mees. As organisations continue to strengthen energy resilience, reduce operational costs and prepare for greater electrification, projects like Grove Business Park demonstrate how solar carports can play an increasingly important role in the future of commercial renewable energy.
