What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK Government initiative to encourage more homeowners and small businesses in England and Wales to install low carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps. The grant has replaced the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and will run from 2022 to 2028. The scheme will be open to domestic and small business properties in England and Wales.

Update: From 23 October 2023, the grant levels for both air source and ground source heat pumps was increased to £7,500. Funding is confirmed until 31 March 2028.

What technologies are covered by the boiler upgrade scheme and how much funding is offered?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers low carbon heating systems including heat pumps:

  • Air source heat pump: £7,500 off cost and installation.
  • Ground source heat pump: £7,500 off cost and installation.

How will I know which low carbon heating system is right for my property?

The choice between air or ground source heat pumps will often be determined by the available space outside your property.

Ground source heat pumps require pipework to be installed beneath the ground adjoining the property which as a rule of thumb might be two to three times as large as the property. Ground source heat pumps are a great option for more rural and agricultural buildings, urban properties are likely to be more suited to air source.

Air source heat pumps are a more popular option, are much easier to install and generally allowed as permitted developments in England, however you should check with your local planning office to see if you will require planning permission or not. If you do require permission, Solarsense are experienced in putting forward the required paperwork and will be able to help you with your application. For more information, please visit heat pumps.
