UK Government Plans to Boost Renewable Energy with Solar Carports

Energy secretary to set out plan to boost renewable energy supply including the development of solar carports

Ed Miliband, the UK’s Energy Secretary, has announced an ambitious new initiative to increase solar energy generation through the installation of solar panel canopies on car parks (also known as solar carports). Part of the Government’s broader “Clean Power 2030” strategy, this plan aims to unlock significant renewable energy potential by utilising the vast space of outdoor car parks for solar energy production.

The initiative is set to play a key role in achieving the UK’s renewable energy targets and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Solar carports are a multi-purpose structure that provide shelter for vehicles whilst generating renewable energy to be used on-site and (or) used to charge electric vehicles, both supporting employees’ adoption of EV cars and supporting businesses which are investing in their own EV fleets. The government is set to launch a call for evidence on the feasibility of solar car park canopies next year, recognising the untapped potential of such clean energy installations.

The move comes as part of a broader effort to boost private sector investment in renewable energy, with expectations of attracting £40 billion annually. This initiative is a step towards making the UK’s energy system more sustainable and resilient, contributing to the nations long-term goals for net-zero emissions.
