Climate change is very much a hot topic in the news at the moment. 

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), NASA and world’s leading climate scientists have warned us that we are already seeing the catastrophic consequences of global warming and that if we continue to burn fossil fuels such as gas and coal, we risk a ‘man-made disaster of global scale’.

Speaking at the UN Climate Conference in Poland last year, world renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough said; ‘climate change is humanity’s greatest threat in thousands of years. If we don’t take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon’.

The UK has made great progress in the past decade, for example 1million homeowners have now switched to solar panels to power their homes with clean, renewable energy. However, we must increase and accelerate the rate at which we generate, store and distribute our energy from renewable sources if we are to avoid irreparable damage to our planet.

The Government and political parties have been criticised in recent months for not acting fast enough. Organisations and individuals such as Extinction Rebellion and Greta Thunberg have made it clear that policy makers and world governments must do more, we cannot become complacent with the progress that has been made.

The Feed-in Tariff came to a close in April 2019 and although this move was heavily scrutinised, the scheme has ultimately achieved its’ goal of increasing the uptake of solar in the UK and reducing the cost of installing solar panels; the efficiency of solar modules has increased dramatically in recent years and the cost of installing a solar PV system today is a fraction of what it has been previously.

The Labour party’s recent announcement to focus on social housing and low income households has been welcomed by the solar industry, especially since solar can save households hundreds of pounds off their energy bills.

Homeowners and businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the financial benefits sought as well as the environmental advantages of renewable technologies. We as consumers must therefore act where we can if we are to acheive the IPCC target of remaining under 1.5°C.
