CLEAN ENERGY GRANTS FOR HOMES

Green Homes Grant to close early after 6 months in operation

The government has scrapped its flagship green homes grant scheme, the centrepiece of Boris Johnson’s promise to “build back greener” from the Covid-19 pandemic, just over six months after its launch.

People who have had their applications for vouchers under the scheme accepted will receive any money owed, but no new applications will be accepted after 5pm on the 31 March 2021.

The scheme has come under scrutiny as a result of its administrative problems and cuts to the funding available, including most recently from the Environmental Audit Committee which described domestic decarbonisation support as being “woefully inadequate”. It is unclear at this stage as to what scheme may be introduced to follow the Green Homes Grant, however, the government said on Saturday that an extra £300m would be directed towards helping people on low-incomes gain access to energy efficiency improvements, through local authorities.

If you are considering a solar thermal system or heat pump for your home, it is worth noting that the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is still available until March 2022, offering quarterly cash payments for seven years after installation. The amount of money you will receive will be based on the type of heating technology you install and the amount of clean heat produced by your renewable energy system.
