Three Devon Way is a new-build office development located in the Longbridge Technology Park, Birmingham. The building occupies land formerly used by the old MG Rover car factory and includes 80 on-site car parking spaces.
The new modern facility will provide flexible working spaces, superb facilities and excellent transport links; improving the local infrastructure and creating an excellent place to work, live and visit.
Solarsense worked with Axiom Building Services, who were appointed as the principle mechanical and electrical contractor for the office development to provide a turn-key solar PV array in order to reduce the sites’ carbon footprint.
Solarsense also supplied, installed and commissioned 4 SWARCO dual socket electric vehicle charging posts to improve the local charging infrastructure and allow the staff and visitors of the office building to charge their electric vehicles on-site.
Solarsense has been working with Axiom on a variety of tender opportunities for more than five years. From schools and universities to large multinational manufacturing plants, our commercial design engineers always work to provide value engineering for all renewable energy projects and tenders.
TASK
After winning the initial tender, Solarsense worked closely with Axiom to provide an optimised flat roof solar PV array alongside a number of electric vehicle (EV) charge points for this office development in South West Birmingham.
As the 56 PV modules were to be installed on a flat roof, the design engineers opted to use a K2 S-Dome mounting frame, clamped to the roof using a K2 seam clamp in order to preserve the integrity of the roofing material. This type of mounting system obviates the need to penetrate the roof – removing the risk of water penetration entirely.
A SolarEdge system was specified in order to meet a tender requirement for a fire safety gateway. This ensures that the PV system is automatically shut down to a safe voltage when the fire alarm is triggered or manually turned off via the emergency stop button, allowing firefighters to work safely in the event of a fire.
Each 335W JA Solar module was fitted with SolarEdge optimisers that would enhance the performance of each individual panel and minimise the impact of some minor shading issues. SolarEdge technology also meant that each panel could be monitored individually; providing full visibility of the system’s technical and financial performance.
