CLIENT

The Northacre Resource Recovery Centre is operated by Hills Waste Solutions under a 25 year contract agreed with Wiltshire Council.

Each year 60,000 tonnes of Wiltshire’s household waste is processed using mechanical and biological treatment (MBT) to create solid recovered fuel (SRF) for use in renewable energy plants.  The site achieved certification to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & BS OHSAS 18001 in June 2014.

TASK

At the time of installation, the system at Northacre RRC was the largest Local Authority rooftop PV system in the UK. The 1,248 solar panels – covering an area equivalent to more than seven tennis courts – generate in excess of 280,500kW hours of electricity each year.

All of the electricity generated is consumed on site, helping to power the mechanical-biological treatment process used to turn household waste into solid recovered fuel (SRF) instead of being sent to landfill.

The benefits of the solar panel system to Wiltshire Council are significant, with annual bill savings and income from the Feed-in Tariff of more than £55,000, as well as annual CO2 emission reductions of 148 tonnes. Over 20 years the financial benefit is expected to exceed £1.5M. The system will also eradicate more than 2,720 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

SERVICES PROVIDED

  • Solar PV Panels
  • Battery storage
  • Bespoke sprinkler system

FROM THE CLIENT

“As a council we are committed to finding sustainable solutions to our energy requirements, as well as cutting costs where possible so more can be spent on front-line services. This is an ideal opportunity to use renewable energy to power a site which uses innovative technology and I’m delighted that we are leading the way in doing this”.
