Client

Kurt Jackson is a leading British contemporary artist, who recreates our natural world by transporting us through colour and canvas. Born in Dorset as the son of two painters, the environment has always been intrinsic to Jackson’s identity as an artist. His work, which reflects this passion for the living natural world, has been largely credited for reimagining nature painting.

Both Kurt’s home and art gallery has sustainability at its very foundations; utilising solar panels, battery storage, ground-source heat pumps, rainwater collectors and energy efficient windows.

The Tesla Powerwall installed at the Jackson Foundation Art Gallery was the first solar battery installed with ‘Island Mode’ to offer seamless back up electricity in the event of a power cut. Powerwall is a battery that stores energy from the grid and your solar panels, detects outages and automatically becomes your energy source when the grid goes down. Unlike generators, Powerwall keeps your lights on without upkeep, fuel or noise.

TASK

As part of phase one, Solarsense installed a 24.85kWp solar panel system on the gallery roof. Mounted on the East and West roofs at an inclination of 20° the SunPower PV system covers a total of 123.9m² and generates more than 24,230kWh of clean energy per year.

As space was limited, the design team opted for high efficiency SunPower modules: allowing for more power and savings per available space. The system is comprised of 76 x 327W solar panels and will reduce the art gallery’s carbon footprint by more than 14,526kg per annum.

As solar panels typically generate more clean energy than your property can immediately use, Solarsense installed a Tesla Powerwall battery. As well as offering back up power, Powerwall allows the gallery to store any excess energy generated by their solar panels; increasing their use of clean energy and reducing their reliance on expensive electricity bought from the grid.
