Heating a large outdoor pool requires a sizeable amount of energy, and is both financially and environmentally a very costly affair.
The owners of the 150-year-old Grade II listed Lido, are great believer in conservation and wanted to find a way to heat the vast amount of water used at the lido without relying on expensive, carbon fuel resources.
The Clifton Lido was reopened in 2008 following a £2.5 million investment. As part of the redevelopment, Solarsense installed a £50,000 solar thermal system to heat the swimming pool, hot tub, showers and the building itself.
Task
The solar hot water system includes 80 square metres of solar thermal evacuated tubes and harnesses clean, renewable energy from the sun.
The 720 solar thermal tubes generate a massive amount of energy, heating three 500-litre cylinders, for showering, as well as the 24-metre swimming pool.
Within three years the system had already generated savings of £100,000 and won the “Best Renewable Energy Scheme” at the annual Regen South West Green Energy Awards.
Technologies installed
- 720 x Kingspan evacuated solar thermal tubes
FROM THE CLIENT
Without solar power our annual fuel bill would be around £90,000 each year but we are saving around a third of that by using solar thermal.
