Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) own and operate the distribution network of towers and cables that bring electricity from our national transmission network to homes and businesses.
There are 14 licensed distribution network operators (DNOs) in Britain and each is responsible for a regional distribution services area. The 14 DNOs are owned by six different groups including; Western Power, Electricity North West Limited, Scottish and Southern Energy, Scottish Power Energy Networks, UK Power Networks & Northern Powergrid.
Do I need to apply for a connection?
Any grid connected solar PV system above 16 amps per phase (3.68kWp single phase or 11.04kWp three phase) will require DNO approval and G59 certification before installation can commence.
This is so the Designated Network Operator (DNO), who manage and maintain that regions part of the National Grid, can assess whether or not the equipment in place will be able to manage the new loads caused by the Generation projects.
